CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SACRAMENTO

California State University, Sacramento

California State University, Sacramento offers a life-changing opportunity for our students, preparing them to be leaders in their careers and communities. Our professors are known for their dedication to great teaching, and smaller class sizes allow personalized attention for students, as well as extensive research opportunities. Sacramento State's location in California’s capital city also provides tremendous opportunities for internships and public service with some of the nation's most influential public and private institutions.

As a vibrant, metropolitan university, Sacramento State enrolls a multicultural student body and graduates about 6,000 students each year. The University has annual economic impact on the region of nearly $816 million and more than $1 billion on the statewide economy.

Sacramento State remains one of the nation’s best higher education values, with student fees among the lowest in the nation. About half of our students receive some form of financial assistance.

Our students choose from numerous fields of study. We offer a strong and diverse academic curriculum that includes 60 undergraduate programs and 40 graduate programs, as well as two doctorates. Our larger programs include Teacher Education, Business Administration, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Psychology, and Communication Studies. In addition, numerous offerings such as the Honors Program help students meet others with similar interests and develop strong ties with professors. Among our programs linked to state government is the nationally renowned Capital Fellows Program, in which graduate students work as full-time staff in the legislative, executive, or judicial branch.

Preparing for a career is a vital part of a Sacramento State education. We have one of the largest cooperative education programs in California, placing students in paid positions where they receive academic credit. Hundreds of other students serve internships in business and government. A third of Sacramento State students work as volunteers – many through a service learning project in class gaining valuable work experience while helping their community. Our Career Center helps students both with finding a career interest and with job searches, through its job database and sponsoring an on-campus recruiting program.

Outside the classroom, Sacramento State students lead active lives. Campus-sponsored arts programs, speeches, debates, comedy shows, and concerts enrich the community throughout the year, and there are abundant cultural and entertainment options in the surrounding area. More than half the University’s students join at least one of 250 student organizations, and thousands participate in the intramural sports program. About 400 intercollegiate athletes compete at the Division I level.

We’re particularly proud of our beautiful 300-acre campus, with its lush landscaping and more than 3,000 trees. Miles of riverfront trails for runners and bikers stretch along the adjacent American River Parkway, linking our campus and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento.

Sacramento's mild climate, rivers, and nearby recreation areas make it popular with outdoor enthusiasts. It hosts the world’s largest traditional jazz festival each Memorial Day weekend, and popular attractions include the State Capitol building, the State Railroad Museum, and the Crocker Art Museum.

Sacramento State is looking to the future with a major campus initiative, Destination 2010, designed to make this a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus for the West. Current students, as well as future students, will benefit from the changes and improvements to our academic program, student services, and facilities.

In August 2009, Sacramento State opended the American River Courtyard, a brand new, LEED-certified, suite-style residence hall. The University's new recreation and wellness center is nearing completion. Beginning September 2010, it will offer more than 150,000 square feet of fitness equipment, gym space, medical facilities and an indoor track.
